She feels invisible, yet
knows she takes up too much space.
The air she breathes, she knows
would be better used by others
yet she continues breathing
and often wonders why.
Tendrils of darkness creep hidden
and unbidden through her mind
she can’t see them but
oh she knows they’re there.
At times they’re like old friends
because they, unlike others, stay.
She walks through her night-world
darkness all she sees
wonders when the world became
monochrome and flat and
she misses the colors she recalls
used to be in the trees.
Going through the motions
of her day, every day:
falling farther, deeper,
into the darkness that fills her
knowing she lost any chance at escape
so very long ago.
