Whispered Wanderings

What if it’s true,
that Extraterrestrials currently walk
among us? I have to ask myself, though,
why? Why would they want to bother? To me,
humankind well, I think we’ve lost our way.
The more we supposedly advance,
the farther backwards we push ourselves!
In too many ways we’ve again become barbaric,
even while holding our shiny little phones:
those appendages we cannot live without,
that contain more computing power than was used
to send Apollo 11 to the Moon.

Maybe they are here; perhaps with plans
to cast all of us out, before we finish destroying
what’s left of our beautiful planet.
Except I’ll bet they aren’t at all sure where
they would banish us to – because it’s likely they’ve seen
that we won’t have learned anything; that we’d just
set about destroying that planet, too. We have again become
destructive, dangerous, deplorable, incorrigible.

And yet: my heart cannot believe that
we are as hopeless as all that. Join me as I pray
that we will learn to change our ways:
before it really is
too late.
