The Rain

(after Paul Simon – from Kathy’s Song)

Like a memory it falls:
pulls me back to an old fantasy,
where you and I sit comfortably,
side by side, on my covered patio.

We watch the rain there, my
head warm against your shoulder;
lost, each in our own thoughts.
Words not needed, we
let the rain speak for us.

I lift my eyes to meet yours;
I know what you’ll see there but
this time, it will be okay and you won’t
run away. You’ll let your eyes
reflect back to me the love I’ve always hoped
was there. Love that you’d never let yourself show.

Then like another memory,
the fantasy also falls away…
as my lonely tears replace the rain.
My heart cannot bear the beauty
of a rainbow, so before it appears
I head back inside, curl up in my bed alone,
and hug myself until sleep comes.
