The Letting Go

Today along my morning walk,
I stopped and picked up a rock.
Unassuming little piece of nature;
except I know it’s already
seen a lot.

I sat in the cool grass then,
holding the welcoming stone;
closed my eyes and poured my
painful thoughts and feelings
into such a willing host.

Then I opened my eyes and stood,
turned around and tossed the stone into
the waiting wash below,
whispering my tearful intention
to simply let it all go.

As I did, a gentle breeze
gracefully dried my tears and
I turned again and walked back home,
leaving the past to itself
at last.
