Whispered Wanderings

Have you ever wondered
how what you once saw as an easy choice
became instead
an irreversible decision?

A promise made so long ago
Once so filled with love
somehow devolves into mutual disrespect
and strained conversations during commercials…
Neither party willing to admit defeat.

Both of us hanging onto what used to be
as if the wish that it still was could somehow
undo the damage we’ve both caused;
Damage
only one of us sees
only one of us feels
only one of us admits a part in

And on it goes.

Years ticking away, while
You continue getting everything you need and
I continue pretending:
