Today’s prompt: Find an Emily Dickinson poem – preferably one you’ve never previously read – and take out all the dashes and line breaks. Make it just one big block of prose. Now, rebreak the lines. Add words where you want. Take out some words. Make your own poem out of it!
Okay, I did it, using her poem Crumbling is not an instant’s Act
but I’m not going to share it here, since that would be plageristic. Is that a word? So I wrote another instead.
For Emily
To rework a famous poet?
Something I’m not keen to do.
I mean, who’m I to think I might
be able to renew?
Her voice still lives, for me, you see
within her words of art…
My voice – imperfect, incomplete
will speak only my heart.
