Today’s prompt: “…write a poem that plays with the idea of a list. Tate’s poem is a list that isn’t – he never gets beyond the first entry. You could try to write a such a non-list, but a couple of other ideas would be to create a list of ingredients, or a list of entries in an index. A self-portrait (or a portrait of someone close to you) in the form of a such a list could be very funny. Another way into this prompt might be a list of instructions.”
Here is my response.
Little Things
So many times we’ve heard that
“it’s the little things”
and well,
from my heart, I submit:
Sitting on my covered patio watching a gentle summer rain…
Reading for the 28th time that one perfect sentence in my favorite book…
Watching someone unaware doing something kind for another…
Reading a complete stranger’s poem and seeing myself in their words…
Hearing “I love you” unexpectedly (but exactly when I need to)…
All of these and more
confirm within my heart that all of us, though separate,
are and always have been
One.
