Smoke And Mirrors

Was what I felt ever real
or was it all just smoke and mirrors,
Some cruel trick of psyche
born from needs so long denied?
“We all chase something” Stevie wrote:
I wish it were a dream.

If it were, perhaps it could
be met inside myself
and end this vague and fruitless longing
this hunger never filled.

But unmoored
I send the dream away
curse myself to wander this emptiness
without you.
